The 2015 Petite Syrah Library Vineyard is another compelling wine from Turley. Spicy, floral and peppery overtones add considerable aromatic nuance to the inky blue and purplish fruit. Savory, plush and deeply expressive, the 2015 has a lot going for it. (Antonio Galloni)
The Library vineyard, located in downtown St. Helena, is among the most unique vineyards in California, with over 24 varieties identified. Where most field blends focus on Zinfandel, this one centers on Petite Syrah, setting it even further apart. A few of the (lesser known) varieties that compose this vineyard include Green Hungarian (once the most widely planted white grape in Napa), Carignane, Trousseau and Aramon. Dark berries, orange blossom, white flowers and chalk on the nose. These floral and fruity aromatics are deceptive, however, for the palate has all the structure and backbone typical of Petite Syrah. Fun to let this sit in the glass for a bit and continuously come back to it, just to see which of the wackadoo varieties will come through next as it opens up.
