Ceretto Barolo 750ml

Ceretto Barolo 750ml 28316

$103.99 price per bottle

With the 2010 vintage of Barolo and 2011 vintage of Barbaresco, the names on the labels of Zonchera and Asij will be simplified to Barolo and Barbaresco. Zonchera and Asij were created as the first Barolo and Barbaresco of the house of Ceretto, from the Zonchetta vineyards of La Morra, under Brunate and the Asili vineyards of Barbaresco. They were our top labels until the 70s, when Bruno and Marcello decided to invest in prestigious single-vineyards and began to purchase the first hectares of vines. From that point forward, for nostalgic reasons, it was decided to continue their production but as distinct labels. Zonchera and Asij thus became the second wine of our more renowned Barolo and Barbaresco. They have always been vinified and aged at the winery in Alba, and the grapes have been sourced from different vineyards, not from individual plots. These are classic wines, intended to be like those from the turn of the century, when the concept of cru was totally ignored by our winemakers.

Review
Alessandro Ceretto’s 2015 Barolos and 2016 Barbarescos are built on the work he and his team have done over the last few vintages. The wines are super-expressive, finessed and full of Nebbiolo translucency. These days Ceretto favors long-ish fermentations of 25-30 days on the skins. The wines spend a year in French oak and finish their aging in cask. All of these wines are gorgeous. From 2015 Barolo…The Bigger Picture (Feb 2019) by Antonio Galloni

Wine maker notes
For more than 80 years the Ceretto family has been making wine in Piedmont’s Langhe. The family is most well known for producing coveted single-vineyard estate grown Nebbiolo wines and high-quality Arneis and Moscato. Their wine production covers seven separate estates, while an eighth (I Vignaiolo di Santo Stefano) is co-owned along with two other growers. The Cerettos were the first producers in Piedmont to use stainless steel for fermenting red wine and adopted other modern techniques, including temperature control for fermentation, reduced maceration times and new oak aging. When Ceretto produced its first Arneis, only 74 acres of this grape were planted in the region. Today there are more than 1,200 acres planted to Arneis. The Ceretto Arneis is considered the benchmark and one in every five bottles of Arneis produced in Piedmont bears the Blange label.

Producer
In search of the cru, a revolutionary idea The quest of the brothers Bruno and Marcello Ceretto was to select vineyards in the most valuable positions historically. This idea came about during a trip to Burgundy, and would prove the family’s insight and see their Barolo and Barbaresco wines among the most popular in the world. A revolution at the time, for a territory in which the concept of cru was totally unknown, but, above all, a brilliant idea. The most difficult challenge the brothers faced was convincing their father who, as was typical at the time, purchased grapes for the wines he vinified. ”You are undertaking a difficult journey, the land has never made anybody rich,” he warned, but Bruno and Marcello were convinced about the potential of the land and stubbornly replied, ”We believe in the land 100%, the winery is obviously important, but great wines are made with great grapes. ” And so, they began dreaming of labels bearing the name of the vineyard and also its image: ”so whoever drinks that wine can see the vineyard from which it has originated. The vineyard is history, the names of the hills remain, unchanged over time, enhancing the quality and credibility of the wines produced here. You can search out, visit and physically touch a vineyard… always. ” In 1986, Wine Spectator, perhaps the most influential American magazine in the world of wine, puts the two Langhe brothers on the cover calling them the Barolo Brothers. Bruno and Marcello were less than 50 years old, but they were not overwhelmed by what was an official consecration, to which all aspire, but few can obtain. Even today, they have remained true to themselves, they have not stopped dreaming and fighting for their righteous goal. Meanwhile, the Langa has grown with them and with those who, like them, puts their name to the land where they were born and accompanied them throughout their lives.
