Sogrape Vinhos has been investing in the main Portuguese wine regions since its inception in 1942. With a strong presence in Dao, Douro and in Vinho Verdes, entering the Alentejo - the national wine-growing region with the highest growth rates - was only a matter of time. Sogrape Vinhos’ first Alentejo wine was released in 1991, produced from selected grapes purchased from producers in the Vidigueira area and vinified in a local winery, hired for that purpose under the guidance of the Sogrape Vinhos winemaking team. Vinha do Monte - a wine that is now synonymous with this region - was the brandname chosen for the launch and paved the way for the 1996 acquisition of Herdade do Peso, also in Vidigueira. The grandeur of the Alentejo and Sogrape Vinhos’ passion for this region drove it to pioneer a project which now gives consumers the best the Alentejo has to offer. Along with the laborious task of improving the estate’s vineyards, in 1998 construction was completed of a winery sited on the property. Now, all the conditions required to make top class wines had been met. The team, led by winemaker Miguel Pessanha, had all they needed to set a new quality standard for Alentejo wines. Both current and contemporary, Herdade do Peso offers varying levels of style and complexity, from celebrated blended wines to the single grape varietals, from more affordable options such as Vinha do Monte to exclusive wines such as Herdade do Peso Reserva. In short, Sogrape Vinhos’ Alentejo wines have something to offer everyone and to suit every taste and occasion. Sogrape’s focus and dedication to this region is borne out by its success in wine competitions and the revues from specialized press throughout the world. Currently the Herdade do Peso winemaking team is led by winemaker Luis Cabral de Almeida. |
