Bittersweet iris and intimations of quarry dust mingle with scents of fresh apple, kiwi and lime. A polished palate boasts lusciously juicy fruit, alluring inner-mouth perfume, and dynamic interaction with stony, peppery, gingery and seemingly crystalline mineral notes. The 13. 7 percent alcohol lends fullness without weighing down the wine or engendering more than the merest hint of heat on the impressively persistent finish. ?It was good not to have waited any longer to pick these grapes,? remarked Bodenstein.

The deep and elegant, intensely colored 2015 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Achleiten offers both a perfectly ripe fruit along with herbal and floral flavors and crushed gneiss. Full-bodied, round, intense and highly elegant, this is a concentrated and powerful Veltliner with a dense and intense fruit. You can drink it now, but this would be a waste of talent. This is a spectacular wine with a piquant acidity and a very ripe and intense, but still precise, fruit and a dominating mineral bass line. The wine has a very good tannin grip, too.

Bursting with lentil, peach, grapefruit and spice flavors, this is rich and round, yet vibrant. The textured finish builds to a long aftertaste of fruit and spice. Drink now through 2020. 542 cases made. -BS
Wine maker notes: Toni Bodenstein describes the grapes from the grand-cru-like Achleiten vineyard as coming from ?destroyed soil. ? So prized has this walled vineyard been over the years that it has been worked down by man and by nature to a point where the coverage of soil is only 40 cm in some parts. The loess soils just barely cover the granitic rocks underneath and yield grapes with great minerality. The long growing season of this southeast-facing vineyard allows the grapes here to attain a level of richness and complexity not often found in cool climate wines. The resulting wines are a stunning mix of finesse and structure.
