Producer Owners Russell Bevan and Victoria De Crescenzo followed their passion for wine back to the vineyards of their native California. Inspired by the winemaking efforts of their friends Philip Togni, Robert Foley and Greg La Follette, Russell and Victoria bought their dream property in Bennett Valley, California from which they produced their first vintage in 2005. Bevan sources premium grapes from the finest vineyards in Napa and Sonoma. Their primary source for Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot – the Showket Vineyard – is situated on the Oakville Hillside overlooking the Silverado Trail and Oakville Crossroad. The soils here are very poor with a mix of red volcanic rock and limited amounts of clay loam. The conditions at Showket are so extreme that each plant receives up to ten gallons of water weekly, and yet a day after watering there is no trace of it. The vineyard’s western orientation allows for optimal sun exposure. Kick Ranch Vineyard is located in Sonoma County’s Rincon Valley, northeast of Santa Rosa. This sustainable vineyard is situated on an alluvial bench where a mix of volcanic and other rock contributes a rich minerality to the wine. Bevan’s approach to winemaking has remained constant since the first vintage. After destemming, each berry is inspected after which up to 8% is discarded. The wines are vinified at a custom crush facility in Santa Rosa and aged in new French barrels that have been chosen from different coopers to complement specific varietals. Each barrel is evaluated bi-weekly, allowing the wines to dictate how they are treated in terms of racking, lees stirring, sulfur additions and bottling. In 2006, Bevan Cellars began utilizing IProof, a tool which enables them to communicate directly with their consumers. The application reads the IProof RFID tags on the bottle and allows the consumer to authenticate the wine and also provides information regarding its provenance, tasting notes, reviews and any updates on the wine.
