Review
These new and upcoming releases from Inglenook continue a trend started in 2011 when proprietor Francis Ford Coppola made major strides in his quest to focus on quality. Chris Phelps is now making the wines, and while it is far too soon to know if there will be any stylistic changes, the 2017s are pretty impressive. I was also quite taken with the 2016s, which are every bit as compelling as they were last year. - From Napa Valley’s Extraordinary 2016 Cabernets - Part 1 (Dec 2018) by Antonio Galloni
Wine maker notes
1882 was the first vintage produced by Gustave Niebaum on the estate that would become one of the most renowned wineries in the New World - Inglenook. In the same year, Niebaum dug a small cave in the foothills of the Mayacamas to experiment and better understand temperature ideals for barrel aging. Niebaums vision was legendary and his inquisitive search for perfection pioneered many initiatives of the modern-day Napa Valley. Today, Inglenook lies in the heart of the famous Rutherford Bench, offering an unparalleled wealth of quality fruit, richness and minerality from this unique terroir. 1882, made exclusively from estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, has been created to honor Gustave.

The Inglenook legacy began in 1879 when Gustave Niebaum, a Finnish sea captain, wine connoisseur and entrepreneur, came to Rutherford to build a wine estate that would rival Europe’s finest. When Niebaum’s grandnephew, John Daniel, Jr. inherited the chateau and vineyards in the 1930s, Inglenook had already earned international acclaim. Francis and Eleanor Coppola purchased the property in 1975 and have spent forty years reuniting the original vineyards, returning winemaking operations to the chateau, and restoring Inglenook’s illustrious heritage with the help of renowned wine consultant Stephane Derenoncourt and Managing Director and Winemaker Philippe Bascaules. In honor of this estate and its historical significance, we have restored the name, Inglenook.
