100-percent rye mash bill from Canada, matured four years in new, charred American oak barrels in New York and then a second maturation in Tennessee in used Uncle Nearest barrels before being bottled at 100-proof. Bold and decadent with notes of praline, nutmeg and white pepper with light vanilla cream, caramelized sugar and the unmistakable spice of rye. Uncle Nearest honors the world's first-known African American master distiller, Nearest Green, who distilled as a slave in pre-Civil War Tennessee and as a free man thereafter until his passing during which time he earned a reputation for making the best whiskey in the region. The company that honors him is owned and operated by a black woman with family relations to Nearest Green.
