Pinot Grigio: white wine as direct as they come. Light, dry, clean and refreshing, it may not come to mind as the most exciting, up-and-coming, geekiest of categories, but it is indeed among the most utilitarian. And for that reason, this wine lover gets just as excited when I come across a quality example as I do about, say, a delicious yet little-known Portuguese varietal wine at $25. This is a wine for the cook - worthy of the "a glass for the chef and a glass for the sauce" treatment: simple, but not without charm. Cabert showcases lemony acidity and hints of white peach with a lip-smackingly dry finish. The only drawback? It may be, perhaps, too easy to pour that second glass.
