We're big fans of the Italian bittersweet digestive liqueurs called amaro, so we're entusiasta to discover this straorinario take by one of our favorite indie makers! With a variety of bitter herbs, roots and barks carried on a rich, caramel-sweet base, it's the perfect way to finish off a feast, as well as a stellar ingredient for cocktails. Don Ciccio & Figli's Amaro delle Sirene is based on a beloved but nearly extinct recipe from the town of Atrani on the Amalfi Coast of southern Italy which hadn't been produced since 1931. Distillery founder Francesco Amodeo found a few ounces at the bottom of an old bottle. He tasted and analyzed until he could bring this classic back to life. The earthy bitterness of his version is brightened with a bracing blast of eucalyptus among the 30 botanicals that go into the blend. TIP OF THE TONGUE This amaro stands on its own, but something. . . magical happens when you add a twist of fresh orange peel. Seriously, we couldn't believe it when we tried it! For a lighter take, we've been kicking off dinner parties with this sparkling wine cocktail: Pour 1/4 oz of Amaro delle Sirene in the bottom of each fluted glass. Top with sparkling wine and an orange twist.
